2007, 2011 Furtado accepted $1 million for a 45-minute private performance for members of Muammar Gaddafi's family at a hotel in Italy. The performance became controversial in 2011 amid the Libyan uprising and the Gaddafi regime's violent repression. Furtado subsequently announced that she would donate the entire fee to charity, and ultimately directed it to Free The Children projects supporting girls' education and development. Source

2011 She donated C$1 million toward girls' schools in Kenya, helped fund the Oleleshwa all-girls secondary school, repeatedly visited the projects, and served as an ambassador for the organization.
