Lynyrd Skynyrd has prominently used the Confederate battle flag in its stage shows and imagery. In 2012, the band briefly stopped displaying it because of its association with racism, then reversed the decision after fan backlash and continued using it while defending it as part of Southern heritage. The song "Sweet Home Alabama" responds to Neil Young's criticism of Southern racism and references segregationist governor George Wallace. Guitarist Gary Rossington said the "boo" after Wallace's name expressed opposition to him, but the song's meaning remains contested. Source
