Lennon acknowledged in a 1980 Playboy interview that he had been physically violent toward women, saying he had been “a hitter” who “hit women” and that he had been cruel to women when he was younger. His first wife, Cynthia Lennon, described him as jealous, possessive and prone to frightening rages, and said he struck her in the face during their courtship, causing her to hit her head against metal piping. She described the physical assault as a single incident, but said the verbal abuse and controlling behaviour continued. Source
1963 Lennon physically assaulted Cavern Club MC Bob Wooler at Paul McCartney's 21st birthday party after Wooler joked about Lennon's holiday in Spain with Brian Epstein. Wooler suffered a black eye and bruised ribs and was taken to hospital. Lennon later said he attacked Wooler because he believed Wooler had called him a homosexual. Source
After divorcing Cynthia, Lennon had little contact with his son Julian for several years. A contemporary review of Cynthia Lennon's memoir reports that Julian received no personal contact from his father between 1971 and 1974 apart from birthday and Christmas presents sent through Lennon's office. Julian later described their relationship as on-and-off. Source
Lennon and Yoko Ono used their public profile for anti-war activism, including the 1969 Amsterdam Bed-In and other campaigns promoting peaceful protest. Source
1972 Lennon contributed a drawing and a piece titled “Why Make It Sad to Be Gay?” to The Gay Liberation Book, supporting the gay-liberation movement. Source
